In its 6th meeting this year, on October 26, the “Working-Level Committee for Foreign Investments” of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE) has approved two foreign investment-funded factory/facility sites in southern Korea as candidates for foreign investment zones, the ministry reported.
One of them is a TFT-LCD glass substrates factory, to be built at the Gumi Industrial Complex in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province. Asahi Glass of Japan and Hankuk Electronic Glass of Korea have ed a consortium for the investment project with funds amounting to 310 billion won (260 million). The investment will be made over the next five years.
The other site will be for a logistics facility in Gamcheon near Busan Harbor, which MCC Logistics KOREA will construct with a 22 billion won-investment over the next five years. The MCC Logistics KOREA is a company set up by Mitsui & Co., Mitsui-Korea and Kuk Bo Transportation for the investment project. Once completed, the logistics center will process large volumes of import freights headed to Japan, the ministry said.
The working-level committee’s recommendation of the sites as foreign investment zones will be reviewed by the “Foreign Investment Committee,” chaired by finance-economy minister, for final approval, the ministry added.
